Santo Domingo: beach, lunch and a swim inland
Santo Domingo has the clearest combination of shore, restaurants and nearby accommodation. The beach stretches along Ometepe’s narrow isthmus, between the two volcanoes. It earns an unhurried afternoon after the pools, with a walk along the water and somewhere to sit over lunch.
Swimming at Santo Domingo
Verdict: a shore walk first, with a dip only when the lake is calm. Wind can roughen this exposed water. For a full swimming morning, Ojo de Agua has constructed pools, showers and changing rooms; finish beside the lake afterwards.

Santo Domingo is a public beach. Hotel gardens, parking, loungers and restaurant seating have separate access terms; public shore status does not open every private property. Villa Paraíso makes sense when the beach and an on-site pool are the reason for staying.

Santa Cruz and San Fernando: a shore with wind in it
Santa Cruz brings the lakeshore beside the road toward Balgüe. A beach break fits around a coffee and petroglyph afternoon, with the Maderas slopes rising behind the settlement.
Swimming verdict: keep this as a lakeside break between farm visits. Santo Domingo has the clearer restaurant-and-beach combination, while the neighbouring San Fernando shore favours wind sports.
San Fernando: learn to use the wind
San Fernando is Ometepe’s kitesurf shore. The season runs November–May, with December–March generally most consistent. Choppy freshwater and small waves favour kite lessons; relaxed swimmers have a better day at Ojo de Agua.
A discovery class lasts about three hours, beginning with kite control and equipment handling before body dragging and board work. Instruction uses a harness, kite, bar, board, flotation vest, helmet and radio. Experienced riders have a different outing from beginners learning to handle the kite.
Playa Mango and El Perú: the Mérida-side lake
Playa Mango is the restaurant afternoon with Concepción across the water. Three friends started the venue in 2019; Nicaraguan food and lakefront seating are the reasons to linger. A meal here fits after San Ramón, with the road journey between the two stops included in the day.
Swimming verdict: come for lunch and the view; any dip is an extra. This is a managed restaurant venue, with its own facilities and access terms. A lakeside kayak rental is also a different outing from a guided paddle into Istián.
El Perú is a separate shore
Playa Perú, or El Perú, lies south of Playa Mango near Mérida. Food, accommodation and kayaking accompany views toward Concepción. Swimming verdict: a lake-view or kayak stop; Ojo de Agua is the stronger family swimming day. Its visitor services do not make it the same place as Mango or Caballito’s Mar.
The named Istián outing meets at the Mérida jetty and continues from open water into wetland channels. The booked meeting point determines the shore start.
Peña Inculta: a forest walk beside the beach day
Near Santo Domingo, Peña Inculta brings old trees and dry forest on lava into a lakeshore visit. Its 1,300 metres of flat trails make a gentler woodland outing than the volcano summits. The woodland belongs to the broader refuge that also includes Istián’s wetland.
Its approach is marked by a wooden sign painted with a parrot, opposite Farmacia Paraíso. A small cabin collects admission when staffed. Use the wooden sign for the approach and follow the entry arrangement on arrival.
Peña Inculta pairs naturally with a Santo Domingo day. From Moyogalpa, Charco Verde brings its own forest and lagoon into an outing closer to town.
Punta Jesús María and Charco Verde from Moyogalpa
Punta Jesús María is the shorter landscape outing from Moyogalpa, about 5.5 km away. The dark sandbar grows as the lake falls, with the volcanoes behind it. Swimming verdict: enjoy the view from shore; the narrow point where currents meet is a poor place to make swimming the main plan.

A Punta sunset needs evening access and the return ride arranged together. A daylight shore stop fits more easily around Charco Verde.
Charco Verde adds woodland, a green lagoon and a butterfly garden. Its lake beach is separate from the lagoon. Swimming verdict: make the reserve a walking outing; the green lagoon is scenery, rather than the swim stop. Allow time for the lagoon circuit and garden before continuing along the shore.
Other shores around Altagracia
Playa Primavera has pale sand and volcano views. Tagüizapa and El Paso Real lie nearer Altagracia town and are public beaches. Swimming verdict: Primavera is a shore-and-view stop; Tagüizapa and El Paso Real suit local beach walks; the central-shore pools supply the swimming facilities.
For a quieter lakeshore stay, San Juan Ometepe sits on the El Quino shore outside Altagracia town. Its private beach and restaurant keep the evening close to the room; the town square is another outing.
El Quino: 200 metres north, then 2.3 kilometres east, Altagracia area.

One shore or a day with a driver?
One beach and a long lunch need an outward and return ride. Santo Domingo and Santa Cruz are on the central shore; Playa Mango and El Perú need their own Mérida-side stop. The island junctions split these road journeys.
A bus visit works around the stopping point and return connection. A taxi with an agreed collection gives a slower afternoon in one place. Carry sun protection, a towel, secure footwear, drinking water and cash for the venues you use.
Several stops with one driver
The nine-hour private driver day joins several shores with Moyogalpa hotel pickup and return. Suggested stops include Playa Mango and Santo Domingo; Ojo de Agua and El Pital are optional additions. Meals, drinks and pool entry cost extra, and English guiding is not guaranteed.

Swimming, children and the windy shore
Ojo de Agua, then Santo Domingo, is the clearest family swimming day. The pools supply the swim and changing facilities; the shore supplies the lake walk and lunch. Wind, waves, water level and the bottom vary along Ometepe’s freshwater coast, so these beach recommendations favour the outing each place does best.
Keep children under direct supervision at the water. A dry-season afternoon can still be windy: the windier months bring walks, meals and kite lessons as well as swimming. For a nature day closer to Moyogalpa, Charco Verde has woodland and butterflies; Punta has the horizon.
