Is Maderas your hike?
Maderas is the stronger choice for a full day among trees, roots and humid forest. Farm paths lead into dense greenery, with the lagoon as the destination. The summit reaches 1,394 m above sea level, but the steep ground and long descent make this a demanding mountain day.
Concepción offers bare volcanic slopes and a lake panorama in clear weather. Maderas rewards an interest in the forest itself, even when clouds hide the distant view. For a shorter woodland outing, the Charco Verde lagoon circuit stays lower and gentler.
Guided hike: from about US$60 per person for the group trek with guide and admission; road transport, food and drinks are extra.
Coffee plots, humid woodland and cloud forest
Farmland, tropical orchards and coffee plots come first on the farm-side approach. These lower slopes connect the mountain to the communities at its foot. Cultivated ground gives way to dry forest, then humid woodland and cloud forest as the trail gains height.
Above roughly 800 m, evergreen cloud forest stays humid through the year. Ferns, orchids, bromeliads and aroids fill the upper woodland; moss and dense vegetation bring the detail close to the path. Mud and roots remain part of the walk even during the drier hiking months.
The mountain’s water landscape
Forest and soil capture moisture that feeds rivers and springs around Maderas. Farms and villages below depend on this water, and San Ramón waterfall belongs to the same mountain system. The waterfall is a separate uphill outing.

The lagoon lies below the rim
Laguna de Maderas occupies the floor of a summit crater about 800 m across. Forest encloses the water, giving the walk a very different finish from Concepción’s open volcanic slopes.
The lagoon route adds a descent inside the crater and a climb back out before the return down the mountain. That final uphill stretch comes with tired legs, so the water is only the halfway destination. The Balgüe farm route reaches the lagoon; the Mérida-side walking allowance ends at the rim. Conditions and the guide’s turnaround determine the day’s endpoint.

Balgüe and Mérida: two different starts
Balgüe approaches Maderas through the northern farm landscape. Mérida lies on the southwest flank. Staying near your chosen trail cuts the morning road journey, especially before a long walking day.
Balgüe: Selvista and Finca Magdalena
The route from Selvista passes Finca Magdalena and petroglyphs, then continues through forest to the crater lagoon. It takes around eight hours return from the farm, above the village. Travel from Moyogalpa comes before and after that allowance.
Selvista suits several nights around these trails, with a wooded hillside setting and a family room with separate sleeping space. Its upper parking approach needs four-wheel drive; the kitchen is shared.
350 metres east of the Balgüe river bridge, at the entrance to Finca Bona Fide.

Mérida: from Finca Mystica
The southwest walk takes six to ten hours return from Finca Mystica to the top of the crater. Steep inclines and mud fill much of this route, including in the dry season. A lagoon descent adds walking beyond that rim endpoint.
The lodge is about an hour’s drive from Moyogalpa; the bus journey takes several hours. On the Mérida road, the lodge sign is the stop before the uphill walk to the building.
Book the guide and the road journey
The private trek is the straightforward choice from Moyogalpa. It combines a mountain guide, admission and return transport with a sandwich, water and juice. Restaurant meals and drinks cost extra. A solo traveller uses a motorbike transfer; a car costs more, and the outing may run bilingually.
The group alternative includes the guide and admission; food, drinks and both road journeys are extra. It works best when your room is close to the start or you already have an outward ride and collection after the descent.
Meeting on the mountain side
A separately arranged guide and road transfer need the same named farm or lodge as their meeting place. Balgüe and the southwest approaches begin different walks. The Maderas tour options fit around other island outings on separate days.

A Moyogalpa room or a Balgüe base?
Moyogalpa works for an organised hike with the private trek’s road transport. For several days of eastern walks and coffee visits, Balgüe is the more convenient base. Ananda’s hillside king room suits couples settling in around Maderas; fans cool the room, and the final 600 metres of approach are dirt and rocky road.

Mérida brings southwest lodge routes and wetland launches closer. The Maderas-side itinerary puts the full hike, Istián paddle and waterfall on different days. A night on the island after the climb leaves the departure ferry for another morning.
Mud, weather and what to bring
Grippy hiking shoes matter on the wet roots and the long descent. A rain layer, food, drinking water and a waterproof bag for essentials belong in your day pack; a change of clothes helps after the humid forest. The private trek supplies a sandwich, water and juice, with extra snacks your own choice.
January and February are a sensible starting point for a hiking-led first trip. Drier island weather still leaves mud on the upper trail. Rain, cloud and the group’s pace can shorten the route.
The Happy Tours trek excludes children under five. Older children need stamina for a steep full day and the crater climb out. Finca Magdalena’s coffee plots and petroglyphs offer a lower outing for a mixed group.
